All Sober in Portland

Oregon's cultural capital may be weird and proud, but it's sober and proud too! We scoped out the coolest sober-friendly spots in our new video guide

January 31, 2024

Sobriety may be going mainstream these days, but Portland remains proudly alternative. It makes perfect sense, then, that Oregon’s biggest city boasts its own unique take on sober spaces — an attitude that makes it a perfect destination for people in recovery or just taking a break from substances.

All Sober correspondent McCarton Ackerman, an expert on the Portland scene, has tracked down the best sober hangouts in the city for this installment of our All Sober In video series!

A social space and venue for recovery support meetings in a century-old mansion, the Alano Club has been a sober institution in the city for 60 years. The Recovery Gym is a top stop for getting your heart rate going and joining a sober fitness class. Or visit Burning Spirits Yoga, which sometimes offers free classes for people in recovery. In the same building, find Tiny’s Coffee, where you can cool down after your session with a hot drink and peers in recovery. Finally, don’t miss the iconic Powell’s Books, world’s largest independent bookstore and the perfect spot to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Traveling sober or just living sober in the city? Check out the other installments of our All Sober In series — we spotlight our favorite places to socialize, exercise, try nonalcoholic cocktails and chill out in New York and Chicago!
