Opioids have gained a reputation as dangerous street drugs that cause fatal overdoses, but oxycodone (brand name: OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), Percocet, codeine, morphine and fentanyl are also legal prescription painkillers. In the short term, they can be safe and effective.

But these medications (including heroin, which is illegal but in the same class of drug) can lead to opioid use disorder.
